After Kolkata and Delhi, Gurgaon Plans to Launch Free Wi-Fi Zones
Indian cities seem to have got in a race to provide free Wi-Fi to its citizens. After Kolkata became the first 4G Wi-Fi-enabled metro in India and AAP in Delhi announced similar plans, the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) wants to achieve the same feat for the city.
The MCG plans to implement free Wi-Fi zones in phases, and in phase one the civic body has identified areas around MG Road and Sadar Bazar to create free Wi-Fi zones. Target areas have been intentionally chosen from Old and New Gurgaon in order to receive feedback from all sections of society. Upon successful completion of the phase one, the MCG plans to implement the service across Gurgaon. The Wi-Fi project is expected to be completed in six months time.
Aiming to replicate almost zero-investment Wi-Fi implementation approach adopted by the New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC), the MCG will call for proposals from interested companies. As per joint commissioner Vivek Kalia, a team of MCG officials have already drafted a request for proposal (RFP), under which, the MCG will ask companies to make the required investments, while the civic body will mainly facilitate setting up of the network. The civic body is expected to release advertisements in newspapers this week to accept proposals from various companies.
